The 2009-2010 series of Nationals championships has now drawn to a close. On behalf of Softball Australia, the National Umpiring Program and the wider softball community, I would like to thank each and every umpire who assisted with Nationals, whether full-time, part-time or liaison officers. I would also like to extend my congratulations to our latest Level 5s – Jana McCaskill (Queensland), Stuart Tyler, Ryan Thorneycroft, Trevor Murphy (Victoria), and Sarah Houston (ACT), and also to our latest Level 6 (All Australian) umpires David Casey Australian Cap number 155 (Queensland) and Vicki Lansley Australian Cap number 156 from New South Wales.
Nationals 2010 saw the combined Under 16s Boys and Girls (Blacktown) and the Combined Open Men's and Women's (Sydney). Nationals 2011 venues have already been announced and include the new Under 17’s competition.
For many states, summer seasons are drawing to a close. Best of luck to all those umpires who are officiating summer finals - good calling, and more importantly, enjoy the experience of being allocated to a final.
The date of the annual Umpire's Theory exam is Monday 31st May 2010. Rule knowledge is an important part of being an umpire and important to all participants in the game. Now is the time to start reviewing your rules - remember that this year's exam will be on the 2006-2009 Softball Australia Rulebook. Preparing the exam is hard work and recognition needs to go to Leigh Evans, overall manager of the process, and his various assistances – Darren Sibraa (Qld) Graham Bancroft (WA) and Rob Harris (WA) for the Basic Theory Exam.
